Is the Life in the UK Handbook Out of Date?
Updated October 27, 2026
The Life in the UK Test is based only on the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition). The handbook was written years ago, and some of its facts have since changed. Here’s what’s out of date and how to handle it on the test.
The rule: answer the way the handbook does
The test questions come from the handbook, so give the answer the handbook gives, even where things have changed since. Our practice questions follow the handbook, and our explanations say “according to the handbook” where the facts have moved on.
Facts that have changed
| The handbook says | What has changed since |
|---|---|
| Queen Elizabeth II is the monarch | King Charles III became king in 2022 |
| Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, is heir to the throne | He is now King Charles III |
| The UK is a member of the European Union | The UK has left the EU |
| The Welsh Assembly has Assembly Members | It is now called the Senedd |
| Population figures from around 2010 to 2011 | The population has grown since |
